Soledad Villa
Soledad Villa is an artist based in the Inland Empire. Her primary disciplines include photography, video installation and social justice theories. She has dedicated eight years to photography, five years to fine art. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California State University of Long Beach College of the Arts in 2018.

Soledad’s intersectional background influences her work and she believes that women of color need more representation in art. She is influenced by the women of color canon. Feminist writers such as Gloria Anzaldúa and Cherríe Morgana have altered her practice of finding identity as Mexican artist. Developing art by form of “Autohistoria Teoria”, Soledad applies her understanding of feminist theories and practices of intersectionality. She bases her works on standards of beauty and her interpretation deconstructing social binaries developed by Eurocentrism.

Soledad’s current interest is the photographic archive. She is utilizing photography as a reference to challenge historical pedagogy by the reformatting of the photograph to re-establish the rhetoric of patriotism. Because her work is research based, Soledad utilizes primary resources to reformat American History books and address forms of oppression throughout time.
